SOSTIENI ACCEDI

With love

Rest peacefully Gemma. We’re so grateful to The Owl & The PussyCat Farm Animal Sanctuary for giving her in her final years what she always deserved.

Words below from those who knew and loved her ❤💔

Gemma came into our care as a depressed, horribly malnourished ex-racehorse, heavily infested with internal & external parasites.
All horses require a lot of care & support. They are expensive. But thoroughbreds require a huge amount more due to being selectively bred (to excel on the track).
This is why most race horses end up in the slaughter pipeline & kill pens once they stop earning big bucks.
But somehow precious Gemma escaped that fate. Yet, heartbreakingly, she still lived a life of hardship & neglect until her mid 30s when we were finally able to broker her surrender.
Gemma was the heart & soul of the sanctuary…always the first to greet visitors, the most cuddly of the herd, & she loved to be the center of attention.
She absolutely blossomed under our care & although she should have mistrusted humans, this incredible old lady was so patient & generous with her time, particularly adoring children & women.
She was wise, kind & cheeky…often walking into the house or poking her graceful head through car windows.
But the growth was so big inside of her precious body that it was pushing on her organs, meaning that over her final 48 hours she wasn’t able to eat or drink enough. And it was pushing on her bladder & bowel, increasingly causing her great pain.
She was so brave & selfless. We know that she didn’t want to leave us because she knew how much she meant to us.
But this is one of the hardest parts of rescue & providing sanctuary to these neglected and abused beings. It’s one of our most important responsibilities…knowing when to give them peace & when to set them free from their tired, broken bodies. 🕊️
What hurts our hearts the most is that darling Gemma had such a long, awful journey before she got to us.
But over the past 3 years she has taught us so much, & has been an amazing ambassador for ALL animals who are treated as commodities.
She has left an enormous hole here at the Sanctuary & in our hearts. But her story doesn’t stop here. We know she will always be by our sides. And we have big plans to ensure her legacy lives on.
