New Footage of Camels Beaten at Birqash Camel Market, Egypt

On the heels of the announcement that CCTV cameras have been installed at the Birqash Camel Market, PETA has made public for the first time privately shot video footage of workers viciously beating camels with sticks and otherwise abusing them at the market. PETA, which aims to remind people of the scope of the abuse, wants all CCTV footage broadcast live on the internet. Previously, PETA eyewitnesses learned that many of the animals at the market are sold to be used at Egypt’s top tourist sites. They saw that their legs were often bound and many had bloody faces from the beatings.

The release of this additional footage comes after a damning PETA investigation of top tourist destinations in Egypt that revealed numerous acts of animal abuse. Camels and horses are forced to haul visitors on their backs or in carriages continually in the blistering heat without access to shade, food, or water. Once camels sold at the Birqash market are no longer able to give rides around the Giza and Saqqara pyramids, they’re returned to the market to be sent to slaughter.
