Meet Shirley Calf. This sweet little girl, like hundreds of thousand of other calves, is sadly considered by the dairy industry as no more than a byproduct. Many people do not realise that cows – like humans – only produce milk for their calves, which means that in order for dairy farmers to make money, cows must be kept constantly pregnant. Once calves are born they are routinely taken away from their mothers after only a few hours before being sold to the veal market or kept on the farm as replacement stock. Thankfully for Shirley, Pam aka “the lady with the hat” has made sure that she will live out her days in peace at Edgar’s Mission. After a somewhat bumpy start, Shirley has now settled in well with her new adoptive sister Susie calf who keeps a protective eye on her. www.EdgarsMission.org.au
