PAKISTAN 2012. As seen on Four Corners. Live animal export is an inherently cruel trade, which is why it is opposed by every animal protection organisation throughout the world. It continues for one reason only: profit. What might happen, if exported animals were deemed 'unfit' for human consumption and lost all of their economic value? It happened recently in Pakistan. The reality will shock you. WARNING: graphic images have been censored however this video is still distressing.

These young calves were loaded on a farm in the west of England and transported, over a period of almost 60 hours, to a farm in northern Spain.

<a href = "http://laverabestia.org/play.php?vid=3953"><img border = 0 width=120 height=90 src="http://laverabestia.org/uploads/thumbs/aqnq1tk6on2md.jpg" align="left" hspace="3" vspace="3"></a>Toronto Pig Save releases footage of pigs transported in extreme heat of July 21 and sent to "kill floor" at Quality Meat Packers the next morning

This video contains footage of activists taking temperatures with a digital thermometer inside pig transport trucks stopping at the long lights at Lakeshore and Strachan (near the Exhibition's Prince's Gates) during Thursday July 21, 2011's heat wave.

On Thursday, Toronto experienced "record hot temperatures" which hit 38 degrees Celsius and well over 40 with the humidity index. If being in the sun is unbearable, imagine what it is like to be a pig stuck in a transport truck in crowded conditions, dehydrated with no water for the entire trip, and standing or lying on feces, which release ammonia fumes and lacerate the lungs.

Later that same afternoon, activist then held a protest at Toronto's Quality Meat Packers on 677 Wellington Street West, where pigs are unloaded with rattle paddles and electric prods.

The video also contains undercover footage of the "kill floor" at Quality Meat Packers taken at 6 a.m. on Friday, July 22 - the day after the heat wave. Many of the suffering pigs on the transport trucks are likely in this footage, which shows pigs being forced into a carbon dioxide gas chamber with hard-wired electric prods. A couple of meters away, they come out stunned from a gondola-like structure and then have one of their legs shackled as they are led upside down up a shaft - later to be bled and "butchered."

The mission of Toronto Pig Save is to "make slaughterhouses have glass walls," including QMP, Toronto's downtown pig slaughterhouse. QMP kills 6,000 - 7,000 pigs a day (up to 35,000 pigs a week). This efficient industrialization of mass killings is grossly unjust for the pigs and the workers alike.

Toronto Pig Save is an animal rights, pro-labour group in support of a just transition towards a food economy that is organic, local, whole-grain, and plant-based - that is, vegan.

Interview with Kate Steen (Peta activist) at Peta's "Human Meat Tray" street theatre protest at Quality Meat Packers in Toronto, June 21, 2011.

The stress of transit commonly brings on Pasturella, a respiratory disease that causes goats to cough violently before they die. TAKE ACTION: www.handlewithcare.tv - Every week as many as 15,000 goats are packed into trucks to make the 2,300 kilometre journey from Namibia to South Africa. They suffer the full 36-hour journey without anything to eat or drink, and may have lacked food, water or shelter for many hours before being loaded. With searing temperatures regularly exceeding 40 centigrade, many animals die from dehydration. Others die from respiratory diseases. They remain packed against the live animals until unloading. Those that survive the journey may have sustained serious injuries as a result of poor driving or have been blinded by dust from the roads. It doesn't have to be like this. Across Africa, live transportation should be replaced with a trade in chilled or frozen meat from animals humanely slaughtered close to home. National rules for the transport and handling of animals should be developed, inspired by World Organisation for Animal Health guidelines.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Animals being transported to slaughterhouses are crammed tightly into trucks, and travel for more than 28 hours without food, water or rest. They are exposed to harsh weather, and die from heat exhaustion or freeze to death -- often being frozen to the side of the truck -- before even making it to the slaughterhouse. These animals are treated as nothing more than money gaining products from the time they are born, during transport, and when they are slaughtered. They have done harm to no one, and yet are given no mercy. Go to tryveg.com and cok.net to learn more about animals who are raised for food and the best way you can help them.

Our investigators found that, in many cases, farmed animals are overcrowded onto vehicles and moved long distances—often exceeding 28 hours—without food, water to drink, rest, or adequate protection from the elements. As a result of such hardships, an untold number suffer in-transit injuries, illnesses, stress and even death.
