To die for a fur coat - Mink farming in Italy

In Italy there are 16 active mink farms and one chinchilla farm. These facilities, unknown and well hidden in the countryside, imprison as many as 200.000 animals. The annual production is estimated to reach 170.000 mink pelts. The minks in these farms live a caged life, deprived of freedom and all that wild animals would experience in nature. The result is stressed animals showing stereotyped behaviours and aggressions between minks in the same cage. They end up gassed and skinned. Our investigation shows for the first time ever the reality of mink farms in Italy and the method used to kill these animals, born to die for their fur, in the name of fashion. Un documento senza precedenti che mostra gli allevamenti di visoni in Italia. Un'investigazione condotta da essereAnimali e Nemesi Animale con lo scopo di rendere visibili questi luoghi sconosciuti e nascosti, in cui ogni anno vengono uccisi 170.000 animali destinati a diventare pellicce. "Morire per una pelliccia" ricostruisce l'intero ciclo vitale di questi animali prigionieri. Entrando negli allevamenti o con telecamere nascoste abbiamo documentato la loro nascita, la loro vita in gabbia, la loro sofferenza e la loro morte. Per la prima volta in Italia viene documentata l'uccisione dei visoni con camere a gas. Per la prima volta in assoluto un nostro infiltrato ha potuto filmare con una telecamera nascosta le prime fasi di lavorazione dei cadaveri. Come tutti gli animali costretti in un allevamento, tutto quello che i visoni possono fare è subire quello che viene loro inflitto dagli allevatori, tutto ciò di cui avranno esperienza è una privazione continua dei loro istinti. Avoimet ovet turkistarhoilla 15.9.2012, Lappajärvi STKL (Suomen Turkiseläin Kasvattajain Liitto) järjesti toista kertaa avoimien ovien päivän turkistarhoilla eri puolella Suomea. Suomessa kasvatetaan vuosittain noin neljä miljoonaa turkiseläintä. Eläimet elävät tarhoilla noin puoli vuotta, siitoseläimet "parhaimmillaan" jopa 5-10 vuotta. Jalostuksesta huolimatta turkiseläimillä on yhä samat tarpeet ja vaistot kuin villeillä sukulaisillaan. Näihin kuuluvat esimerkiksi liikkuminen, saalistaminen, minkeillä uiminen, ketuilla kaivaminen, reviirin puolustaminen, pariutuminen, pentujen hoitaminen ja lajille ominaisten sosiaalisten suhteiden ylläpito. Pienissä, virikkeettömissä ja luonnottomissa häkeissä elävillä eläimillä on monenlaisia oireita, jotka kertovat henkisestä häiriintymisestä. Varsinkin minkeillä on paljon stereotyyppistä käyttäytymistä, kun taas ketut usein kyyhöttävät häkeissään apaattisina. Lisäksi puutteelliset olot ja jalostus aiheuttavat eläimille fyysistä tuskaa ja sairauksia. Video on kuvattu parikkalalaisella turkistarhalla elokuussa 2011. Videollä näkyy mm. ketunpentu, jonka takajalka on poikki ja pentu, jolla on häntä poikki. Tämän turkistarhan omistaja tuomittiin 570 euron sakkoihin Etelä-Karjalan käräjäoikeudessa kesäkuussa 2012. Tuomion mukaan mies laiminlöi törkeästä huolimattomuudesta vammautuneiden eläinten lopettamisen ja aiheutti tarpeetonta pitkäaikaista kärsimystä. 2011 syksyllä eläinlääkäri joutui lopettamaan miehen tarhalla neljä ketun poikasta, joilla oli jalkoja poikki. Myös videolla näkyy neljä kuollutta ketunpentua, joilla on jalkoja poikki. Tarha on kuvattu kahdesti myös vuonna 2010, ja tarhalla on jo silloin ollut runsaasti elänsuojeluongelmia.

Un reportage ottenuto grazie a una investigazione sotto copertura di Animal Defenders International, che rivela le orribili condizioni in cui sono tenuti gli animali in 30 allevamenti in Finlandia, uno dei maggiori produttori di pellicce in Europa (un esempio tipico, perché tutti gli allevamenti sono uguali, in tutto il mondo). Anche se l'uso della pelliccia intera è sempre meno diffuso, moltissimi animali vengono fatti soffrire e morire per servire da decorazione a cappotti e giubbini, in forma di colli, polsini e altri inserti. Non perché i clienti lo richiedano, ma perché gli stilisti e chi idea i capi d'abbigliamento hanno deciso così. Occorre dunque rifiutare questa 'moda' fatta di morte, e non comprare mai nulla con inserti in pelliccia, anche quando sembra finta, perché non lo è quasi mai, sono animali uccisi. Nella loro vita, gli animali d'allevamento conoscono solo la reclusione in spazi limitatissimi e sovraffollati. Trascorrono la loro vita in piccole gabbie sporche con il fondo metallico in rete, sono esposti forzatamente al freddo, al vento e al gelo per infoltirne il manto. Sono vittima dei loro stessi simili per fenomeni di cannibalismo e di aggressività generati dalle allucinanti condizioni di vita. Vengono uccisi all'età di 7-8 mesi mediante elettrocuzione anale e vaginale, rottura delle ossa cervicali, asfissia con gas tossici o soffocamento, sparo di un chiodo nel cervello seguito da dissanguamento. Occorrono dai 30 ai 60 animali per una sola pelliccia di visone, dai 180 ai 240 animali per una sola pelliccia di ermellino, dai 130 ai 200 animali per una sola pelliccia di cincillà, dalle 10 alle 24 animali per ottenere una sola pelliccia di volpe.

Investigazione sugli allevamenti di visoni in Svezia

Per il secondo anno consecutivo l’Animal Right Aliance ha documentato attraverso foto e video, le condizioni degli animali in 7 allevamenti. Dopo la scioccante investigazione dello scorso anno, dove furono visitati 18 dei 75 allevamenti presenti nel territorio svedese, nulla è cambiato. Le immagini confermano quanto visto l’anno precedente e ritraggono gli animali in comportamenti ripetitivi e stereotipati, con gravi ferite e parti del corpo mutilate. Tutti espliciti segnali di stress dovuti alla mancanza di libertà di un essere vivente tenuto in gabbia. Nel maggio del 2010 per far fronte all’indignazione della popolazione in seguito all’uscita dell’investigazione, il Consiglio dell’Agricoltura svedese ha proposto una serie di modifiche per migliorare la situazione degli animali negli allevamenti da pelliccia. Queste riforme che dovrebbero attuarsi nel 2014 prevedono l’allargamento delle gabbie e l’inserimento al loro interno di oggetti che dovrebbero cambiare in meglio la vita dei visoni. Cosa siamo noi umani, esseri superiori amati da Dio , se non semplici animali?Continuiamo a pensare a noi e agli animali come due cose diverse ma ci dimentichiamo delle nostre origini, noi non siamo semplicemente l'evoluzione di un animale ma siamo noi stessi un animale! E non è un offesa, perchè animale non è un aggettivo con senso dispregiativo ma è quel nome che indica un qualsiasi organismo in grado di muoversi autonomamente.Pensando agli animali come qualcosa di diverso e distaccato da noi siamo arrivati a compiere le più gravi stragi e a comportarci in maniera assurda autodistruggendo il nosto habitat e noi stessi. E' classificando gli indiani d'america come animali, che li abbiamo sterminati e ci siamo appropriati delle loro terre come se nulla fosse, è considerando animali gli africani che li abbiamo sfruttati nelle coltivazioni e resi schiavi, è etichettandoli come animali che siamo arrivati a rinchiudere in campi di concentramento un numero enorme di persone , ebrei, e ad ucciderle in massa e così è stato tutte le volte che abbiamo sottomesso un nostro simile: semplicemente l' abbiamo degradato ad animale.E ancora oggi basta poco perchè diamo dell' animale a qualcuno... e considerare una persona un animale vuol dire trattarla come tale. Trattarla come quegli animali che alleviamo in condizioni estreme, che uccidiamo per il piacere del nostro palato, della nostra estetica e per divertimento, come quei miliardi di animali che ogni giorno facciamo soffrire come se nulla fosse, come se fosse normale, tranquillo, persino ovvio.Ricordiamoci che anche noi siamo animali, che se noi siamo come loro, loro sono come noi. Informazioni tratte da direttanews.it: "SVEZIA DEL SUD – È una storia curiosa quella che viene dalla Svezia del Sud: nella notte tra domenica e lunedì scorso, in una fattoria nei pressi di Skillingaryd, qualcuno ha aperto le gabbie dove erano tenuti i visoni e ha lasciato che gli animali fuggissero. Fin qui nulla di eccezionale, se non fosse che ad essere scappati via sono oltre 17.000 esemplari. Ad accorgersi di quanto accaduto è stato un automobilista, che verso le 3 della notte si è visto attraversare la strada da un fiume di visoni. Intuendo che qualcosa era successo, ha allertato le forze dell’ordine. Bo Kellert, del distretto di polizia di Jönköping, al quotidiano Aftonbladet ha detto che il proprietario dei visoni stima la perdita in otto milioni di corone (più o meno 800mila euro). Kellert ha aggiunto che difficilmente i visoni riusciranno a sopravvivere, trattandosi di esemplari ancora molto giovani. Quanto all’autore del gesto, la polizia sta indagando ma per ora gli investigatori non hanno molti elementi su cui lavorare. Bo Kellert ha aggiunto che non sono stati lasciati messaggi. In estate fuori dalla fattoria c’erano state manifestazioni di animalisti, ma la polizia è cauta nello stabilire un contatto con l’episodio dell’altra notte." In accordo a quanto dichiarato dai media svedesi al momento sono circa 4.000 i visoni recuperati e 50 quelli investiti dalle auto. Questo significa che ben 13.000 hanno possibilità di sopravvivere.

For the past year-and-a-half, the Animal Rights Alliance investigation unit has been mapping out the Swedish fur industry. We have combed through environmental inspection protocols, court documents and research reports and what’s more - we have visited one-fifth of the 75 mink farms in Sweden to see them for ourselves. We have discovered major environmental violations by an industry that is already highly-criticized. Above all we have discovered the mink. Clever, beautiful wild mink imprisoned in shed after shed, housing row after row of small dirty cages. Mink that will never see any water beyond what comes out of a water nipple, even though they are hunters that naturally spend half of their life in water. Mink that express so-called stereotypical behavior, endless repetitive motion without purpose, a feeble attempt at dealing with stress and frustration. We already knew that this would be the case. We were prepared for meeting curious eyes behind bars from animals that are so psychologically-broken that they incessantly circle their cages. We knew that it would be bad, but reality on the farms was worse than we could have ever imagined. We understood that the mortality rate would be high. Several reports show that one out of every four or five animals die before they reach 6 months of age. But we didn’t know how they die – and how they suffer. Now we know. We have seen pups chewing on their dead littermates, entire litters where every animals has had its ear bitten off; young animals with gaping wounds on their heads; and fully-grown mink that twist and turn in agony, screaming in panic from pain and illness that minutes later ceases but only with their death. It has been terrible to see all of this without being able to do anything about it. On our worst days, we felt completely powerless. But we’ve been driven to continue toward our goal – to make public the horrific animal cruelty that occurs on the farms. This animal cruelty cannot continue in silence. The fourth paragraph of the Animal Welfare Act clearly states that all animals must be allowed to express their natural behaviours and that they must be protected from unnecessary suffering. But Sweden continues to allow mink to be bred and kept in mesh cages that are no bigger than 30 x 90 centimeters before being killed to produce an unnecessary luxury product that nobody needs. In 2003, the Swedish Commission of Inquiry into the Fur Industry gave Swedish fur farms until 2010 to comply with the Animal Welfare Act. Seven years later we can conclude that the Swedish fur industry has done nothing to improve conditions for mink on fur farms. It is high-time that the fur industry is made history. The Animal Rights Alliance The Animal Rights Alliance is a not-for-profit campaigning group that speaks for the animals. Founded in 2005, we have since then brought about the criminalization of bestiality, organized five veggie food conventions and exposed the Swedish pork industry through undercover investigation. Our work for the animals is completely dependent on donations, supporting members and active volunteers. STEREOTYPICAL BEHAVIOR “Animals shall be kept and maintained in an environment that furthers their good health and allows them to behave naturally”. – Animal Welfare Act (1988:534), 4 § We have filmed evidence of stereotypical behavior on thirteen of the fifteen farms that we visited. The stereotypes, by which we mean incessant repetitive motion that serves no purpose, is a feeble attempt by the mink to deal with stress and frustration. It is a common symptom of an animal’s natural needs not being met. “The majority of mink show typical signs of derangement that animals express when confined to areas that are too constrictive” – Sverre Sjölander, Professor in Zoology. SICK AND INJURED ANIMALS “A sick or injured animal shall be given necessary medical attention, if the illness or injury isn’t severe enough to justify the animal being put down immediately”. Animal Welfare Act (1988:534) § 9. We have found sick animals with infected eyes and ear; unconscious, convulsive and dead animals were found on two-thirds of the farms. Maimed, bleeding animals with torn-off ears, large gaping head wounds and missing limps were found on eleven of the fifteen visited farms. The horrific injuries are the result of fights caused by crowding in shockingly small cages – in the wild mink interact only to mate – but the injuries are also oftentimes caused by self-mutilation. According to 2 § of the Animal Welfare Act, animals are to be “treated well and are to be protected from unnecessary suffering and illness”. “If a cow becomes sick, then we’re called immediately. But the mink are so many that if one animal becomes sick, then we're not called – the animal has too little economic value for the farmer. We only get called if there is an epidemic. But every animal has an intrinsic value and the Animal Welfare Act clearly states that if an animal becomes sick, then it must be treated or euthanised. Large farms like mink farms have so many animals that it can take time before illness is discovered” – My Leffler, District Veterinarian who used to work on mink farms. DEAD ANIMALS IN THE CAGES On 80% of the farms, we found dead animals in the cages – in most cases, the carcasses were left among other living animals. In many cases, the carcasses had been half-eaten by their mother and siblings. “ In the natural world, it isn’t normal for a mink to be forced to be around another dead mink. When it happens on a farm, it can lead to cannibalism because they are so under stimulated and don’t know how to react to the situation” – Mark Collins, Veterinarian DIRTY CAGES On 67% of the farms, we found cages where large amounts of faeces had piled up, oftentimes in thick layers. Mink avoid their own feces so when the cage fills up with waste, an already small space becomes even smaller. ILLEGAL SEWAGE RUNOFF Manure runoff could be documented at 80% of the farms. Mink manure contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus and causes contamination of water and soil if leaked out into the environment. Mink farms are therefore classified as environmentally-hazardous operations. By law, manure must be stored in such a way that it is sheltered from rain while preventing soil seepage. ILLEGAL HANDLING OF CARCASSES “Carcasses awaiting transport shall be stored in such a way that disease cannot be spread through contact with wild animals. The waste shall be stored separate from living animals” – Board of Agriculture Regulations 2009:6, section K 14. Dead mink that had been left to rot throughout and around the farm property, or were otherwise disposed of improperly, were found on 73% of the farms, even though all carcasses must be immediately removed and stored, preferably frozen. Many carcasses had been left to rot for at least 6 months, since the pelting season last November. CANNIBALISM We have documented cannibalism on half of the farms. Mink females that kill their young and littermates that kill and eat one another is more the rule than the exception. Cannibalism is caused by stress and lack of stimulation. The mink have no release for their hunting instincts and those mink that fall victim to attack have no possibility to take flight or cover in their tiny cages. “Animals on fur farms have high levels of stress and this can cause cannibalism” - My Leffler, Veterinarian. Cuccioli di visone nati in allevamento, che non impareranno mai a camminare, perché le loro zampine restano incastrate nelle griglie delle gabbie, impedendogli di stare eretti. E poi musi orribilmente deformati da gengive che crescono fino a inglobare i denti, code mozzate, gabbie arrugginite e piene di escrementi, cadaveri di animali morti mangiati dai compagni di gabbia. E' quanto mostrano i filmati e le fotografie scattate dai volontari dell'associazione animalista Animal Defenders International (Adi), che nei mesi scorsi si sono infiltrati in trenta allevamenti di volpi e visoni in Finlandia, uno dei quattro principali produttori di pellicce al mondo (viene da lì l'8 per cento delle pelli annualmente prodotte nel mondo). E ora le loro fotografie e le registrazioni sono finite in video choc e in un dossier di denuncia che è stato presentato venerdì a Milano, in concomitanza con la settimana della moda, dall'Adi e dal network animalista AgireOra. Da Milano, capitale della moda italiana, parte una campagna di sensibilizzazione che nei prossimi mesi girerà tutta l'Italia. Un monito per stilisti e consumatori, spiega Marina Berati, coordinatrice di Agire Ora: «Ad avere la responsabilità di quella che è una vera e propria tortura sugli animali non sono solo gli allevatori, ma anche gli stilisti e i loro clienti che acquistano le pellicce.
