Animal Defenders International (ADI) has launched the first nationwide initiative in the US about the use of elephants giving rides or making appearances at public events. At the heart of the campaign is a new DVD narrated by Emmy award winning TV host Bob Barker entitled 'No Fun For Elephants,' featuring harrowing undercover footage from inside elephant training facilities in California, as well as abuse of an elephant on tour by a Texas-owned company. The 'No Fun For Elephants' DVD is being mailed to event organizers across the US, including board members of county fairs, renaissance fairs and organizers of town parades, urging them to adopt a humane 'no elephant rides or performances' policy, in view of the suffering these animals endure. MORE evidence of Brian Boswell's Circus cruelty, this time of his tigers. This footage contains 3 short clips taken by Liezel yesterday. It was just after 2.00pm after the show began at 2.00. The tigers (and lions) live in tiny cages on a trailer. This is where they eat, sleep and defecate. They are separated into individual compartments, one per cage so they cannot even physically interact. In the first clip one tiger is pacing back and forth. The others are at rest. Next a staff arrives with a big stick. With a threatening demeanor he proceeds to bang hard against the bars with the stick and the third clip shows the effects of the staff and his stick, with the tigers extremely agitated and unable to escape. Liezel reports being shocked and feeling sickened to her stomach at witnessing this first hand. She said she felt extreme anger at Boswell and other people who make a living out of tormenting and abusing animals. In her words, "It was a bloody crime scene!" This is the kind of info Boswell does NOT want his patrons to be aware of. This is the kind of abuse and torture they suffer on a daily basis and it is NOT acceptable! This took place in his show grounds where the animals are on public view. The real cruelty in training and retraining circus animals takes place away from the public eye. This Medieval and cruel practice of using animals for "entertainment" in circuses or elsewhere has no place in the modern world. Many countries have banned their use and more are following suit. It is time for people to stop supporting this spectacle. Some of the most spectacular and successful circuses in the world rely on human art and talent for entertainment. Let all of us work towards creating awareness of what a circus ticket supports and spread the word far and wide.

Conrad Ensenyat, conservador de mamíferos y veterinario del zoo, ha presentado a los medios de comunicación a Bully, la nueva elefanta que se incorpora a la colección de paquidermos en Barcelona, afirmando que Bully está tranquila y entrenada para su transferencia de un lugar a otro. Para habituarlas no existe un protocolo, ya que las fases de introducción se deben seguir según las reacciones de las elefantas y las interacciones entre ellas. El zoo pretende tener un grupo de elefantes reproductores, a pesar de las informaciones de expertos científicos que afirman las poquísimas posibilidades de que ello sea factible con estas tres hembras, por la edad que tienen y la que tendrán cuando un supuesto nuevo proyecto de zoo sea una realidad. Los expertos también ven poco viable ese proyecto reproductor por el hecho de que su gestación es la más larga de todos los animales terrestres, durando 22 meses y teniendo sólo una cría por embarazo, por la edad que tienen y su esperanza de vida y por el hecho de no haber sido madres anteriormente, ya que la edad de apareamiento empieza a los 14 años en libertad, siendo montadas por machos adultos, de entre 40 y 50 años, ya que ellas eligen a los elefantes más grandes de sus manadas, formadas por cerca de 20 individuos. Según Ensenyat las elefantas están bien y pueden controlar su estado de salud gracias a la técnica de “estracción voluntaria de sangre”. Para mostrar el estado de adaptación de la elefanta al nuevo recinto donde será recluída han mostrado a Bully mientras comía. Mientras Bully era presentada a la prensa, el político de Unitat per Barcelona, biólogo y responsable del Zoo de Barcelona durante cuatro años, Jordi Portabella, ha enviado una nota de prensa en la que pide un dictamen avalado por la comunidad científica internacional para determinar la conveniencia de continuar ampliando la colección de grandes mamíferos del zoo. Portabella considera un desacierto ampliar la colección de elefantes en las instalaciones actuales del zoológico de Barcelona y cita las opiniones en el mismo sentido de expertos de prestigio internacional. Unitat per Barcelona defiende que el parque barcelonés reduzca drásticamente el número de especies que mantiene, que actualmente es de 138, y amplíe el espacio disponible para el resto de animales para "situar el zoo como referente conservacionista". Las organizaciones de Derechos Animales siguen pidiendo la transferencia de los animales a santuarios y el cierre de los zoos.

Les elefantes del Zoo de Barcelona, Yoyo i Susi, no saben encara que el nou govern municipal s'ha erigit en especialista científic sobre paquiderms i ha decidit que “on mengen dos mengen tres”. El zoològic està treballant per a incorporar en dues setmanes a Bully, una elefanta femella de 27 anys procedent del Bioparc de València, on va arribar després de ser explotada en un circ. L'Ajuntament de Barcelona finalment ha confirmat la notícia encara que, durant les primeres hores, s'havia negat a realitzar qualsevol declaració i ha explicat que "el recinte dels elefants del Zoo ha experimentat millores en els últims tres anys", com l'ampliació de la superfície disponible, el substrat, la construcció de nous dormitoris i coses tan prescindibles per a les elefantes, com imprescindibles per a visitants sense coneixement de les necessitats reals dels paquiderms, com la decoració d'aquestes instal·lacions. Igualment ha anunciat que el Zoo seguirà "treballant, en diferents fases, en l'ampliació de les instal·lacions exteriors d'aquest recinte". Encara que al principi van tenir greus problemes de convivència, estrès i rebuig i segons el consistori, Susi i Yoyo "ja es troben totalment associades i conviuen sense cap problema". La presidenta del Zoo i segona tinent d’alcalde de l'Ajuntament de Barcelona, Sònia Recasens, ha valorat molt positivament la incorporació de Bully i ha dit a La Vanguaria que: "Serà molt beneficiós per a les altres dues elefantes, ja que permetrà passar de parella a grup, un canvi que podria culminar en el manteniment futur d'un grup reproductor, com recomana el Programa de Cria Europeu (EEP)". La presidenta del zoo ha afegit al mateix mitjà que "Barcelona aposta per un zoo de referència científica, conservacionista, educacional i d'atracció turística i cultural", remarcant que tant el Bioparc de València com el Programa de Cria i les autoritats espanyoles "han donat el seu acord al trasllat de l'elefanta". El futur trasllat de la nova elefanta compta amb l'oposició de diferents associacions animalistes. Alejandra García, de l'entitat Libera!, critica que amb aquesta nova incorporació “es trenca el compromís del Zoo adquirit el 2010 de no portar nous elefants" . En una carta enviada per la Doctora Joyce Poole, directora de Elephant Voices, durant el 2010 als responsables del zoològic ja alertaven dels problemes de convivència i falta d'espai de les elefantes Susi i Yoyo i, encara que en un primer moment, les informacions que es reflectien en el diari El País deien que els gestors d'aquest espai tenien documents on el compromís adquirit amb la doctora Joyce Poole i amb el conservador del zoo, Conrad Ensenyat era “de no portar elefants directament de la naturalesa ni nous exemplars si no hi havia ampliació”, tant la carta, que destacava que els elefants no estan adaptats per a la vida en un zoo urbà ni creien que el de Barcelona fos capaç d'oferir-los el que necessiten per a prosperar, com les conferències que va realitzar Joyce Poole a Barcelona demostren que, en cap cas, ha defensat que es portessin més elefants, ni captius ni lliures, exposant la seva opinió com experta sobre les necessitats físiques i psicològiques dels mateixos i concloent que un zoo urbà no és un lloc adequat per a adaptar als elefants a aquesta captivitat forçada. Les ordres per a acostumar a Yoyo, de 44 anys, i a Susi, de 39, davant l'arribada de Bully ja s'han engegat i consisteixen en fer-les dormir juntes i rebre neurolèptics per a drogar-les i mantenir-les calmades per a rebre a Bully, que serà separada del seu grup actual de 10 elefants per a traslladar-la i adaptar-la a un nou espai i companyia. També hauran d'adaptar-se entre elles per a decidir qui és la nova matriarca, pel que es desbaratarà un delicat equilibri tant en el grup de procedència de Bully com en el grup de destinació. Davant la mort d'Alicia, l’altra elefanta que malvivia al zoo, els grups de defensa dels Drets Animals van iniciar una campanya per a traslladar a Susi a un santuari, però el govern anterior, desoint les aportacions de científics i especialistes, va decidir introduir una nova elefanta en les obsoletes instal·lacions del zoo de Barcelona, la Yoyo. Igual que el govern actual ha decidit amb la Bully. Amb les noves adquisicions per a la col·lecció d'animals captius, el zoo està pendent del disseny i construcció del pati exterior, pel que els animals haurien de patir, a més, totes les molèsties i estrès derivats d'aquestes obres: modificació de dormitoris, noves menjadores, aprendre les noves ubicacions dels cables amb corrent que limiten els moviments de les elefantes… L'ajuntament no ha explicat quants metres d'espai guanyaran aquestes instal·lacions, ni tampoc a quins altres animals se'ls restarà aquest espai ja que el zoo està enmig de la ciutat i no pot ampliar-se el seu espai total, desoint, una vegada més, les opinions d'una científica que, de forma altruista, els va oferir tots els coneixements que es requereixen abans de prendre qualsevol decisió política. L'associació Libera! ha comunicat a Joyce Poole la manipulació que han sofert les seves paraules per part del consistori i el zoo de Barcelona i presentarà, pròximament, les accions contra les mateixes i contra el trasllat d'una nova elefanta al zoo barceloní.

L’Associació Animalista Libera! i la Fundació Franz Weber han revelat les imatges de les instal·lacions interiors situades al subsòl del zoo de Barcelona davant els mitjans de comunicació. En aquestes imatges es pot comprovar que l’engabiament dels animals al zoo, si ja és terrible en la part que s’exposa al públic, és una autèntica presó a la zona que no es mostra ni s’ha permès visitar per especialistes científics com la Doctora Joyce Poole a petició de Libera! Aquesta zona de masmorres és la que acull als animals que malviuen al zoo durant la major part del dia, superant fins i tot 15 hores de reclusió en elles. Les gàbies situades al subsòl són fredes, humides, fosques i presenten com a zones per al descans algunes estructures metàl·liques corroïdes per l’òxid que pretenen ser lliteres. Els animals romanen en aquests soterranis la major part de la seva vida; això és així perquè només surten a les instal·lacions exteriors quan el zoo està obert al públic, encara que alguns animals poden ser exhibits només a la tarda o al matí. Fins i tot n’hi ha que no surten mai i altres individus als quals van alternant per a sortir a l’exterior. A l’hivern els animals passen tancats al soterrani unes 17 hores. Amb l’horari d’estiu, el mínim d’hores en les quals són tancats en aquests soterranis és de 15 . Alguns dels animals que han estat filmats en aquestes gàbies del soterrani, mai han estat vistos a l’exterior i es desconeix si encara segueixen amb vida. En les imatges, que han arribat a les mans de Libera! en un sobre anònim, es pot observar l’existència d’una cria de tapir amb un problema a un dels ulls a la qual mai s’ha vist a l’aire lliure, pel que segurament mai haurà vist la llum del sol, i de la qual es desconeix si encara segueix amb vida. També s’observa un jaguar cec que mostra estrès als estímuls auditius i que tampoc ha estat vist a l’exterior i un ós que es resisteix a entrar al soterrani a pesar de l’hàbit forçat a residir la major part de la seva vida allí També s’observa com es molesta als óssos amb pals o escombres perquè els dopen amb diazepan i tracten d’espavilar-los una mica abans que surtin a l’exhibició exterior, encara que presenten símptomes clars d’estar patint les conseqüències d’aquest estat de drogoaddicció per la gran quantitat d’escuma que surt de la seva boca, els moviments maldestres i la no reacció a aquests estímuls. Les girafes són ficades en gàbies en les quals no poden pràcticament moure’s i a les quals, a pesar de l’hàbit que haurien de tenir pel temps que duen tancades en captivitat, es neguen repetidament a entrar. Les imatges obtingudes mostren a hienes dormint en gàbies com les quals es poden veure a les gosseres, els antics dormitoris de les elefantes que encara no s’han clausurat, mandrils i diversos primats en gàbies llardoses i absolutament inadequades que incomplirien qualsevol mesura de salubritat si fossin revisades per experts científics i no es basessin, exclusivament, en l’assessorament de l’Associació Europea de Zoos i Aquaris, de la qual fins i tot es pot llegir en la seva pàgina web alguns protocols per a mantenir als animals drogats per a poder ser exposats al públic o per a ser habituats a la reclusió amb altres animals. Mentre això passa lluny de les mirades dels visitants, el zoo i l’Ajuntament intenten manipular a l’opinió pública parlant de “naturalitzar” les instal·lacions exteriors, posant decoració de cartró-pedra i plàstic, quan a través d’aquestes imatges es pot comprovar que la veritable situació dels animals captius allí està molt lluny de qualsevol concepte que els sigui natural a ells. Igualment, l’únic concepte d’educació o pedagogia possible que fa el zoo és el de ser expert en intentar ocultar que, els animals, no poden viure aquesta captivitat pel mer fet de ser productes d’exhibició per a un suposat prestigi de Barcelona que es va declarar “ciutat amiga dels animals” el 2004. El cost de la decoració dels espais exteriors s’elevarà, segons els representants de l’ajuntament, a 25 milions d’euros. Les imatges captades al subsòl mostren que el zoo de Barcelona, igual que la resta dels zoos, és un altre negoci fraudulent d’ús i maltractament dels animals mentre que oculta la veritat als que aporten els seus diners a les taquilles, com ara que alguns dels animals exhibits van ser capturats en llibertat. Des de Libera i Fundació Franz Weber presentaran la denúncia corresponent davant la Comissió de Medi ambient del Parlament Europeu a Brussel·les i demanen la dimissió del director del zoo, Miquel Trepat, i del cap de veterinaris, Hugo Fernández, conegut en el món dels defensors dels Drets Animals per afirmar que els animals, no humans, no senten emocions.

There was no Hollywood ending for Tai the elephant who appeared in the movie Water for Elephants with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson, nor Rosie the elephant who appeared with Kevin James in Zookeeper. Both are back at the circus, performing and giving rides with El Zagal Shrine Circus in North Dakota. Water for Elephants was met with a storm of controversy as it opened worldwide last year after ADI released undercover footage of the elephants, including Tai and Rosie, being beaten and electric shocked at Have Trunk Will Travel. ADI released the footage after the film's makers, stars, American Humane, Have Trunk Will Travel claimed the elephant had been treated with love and affection and never abused. For a year Pattinson, Witherspoon and James have refused to comment on the horrific abuse that ADI exposed at Have Trunk Will Travel -- where the elephant movie actors were beaten with bullhooks, punched and given electric shocks. At the time we believed that Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon had been duped into thinking Tai had been humanely treated. We sent them the video and asked them to speak out. Not a word. The abuse of performing animals in movies is not going to stop until the stars start to speak out. ADI are sending Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, and Kevin James our latest video. We want them to come out and condemn the abuse and back HR 3359, the Traveling Exotic Animals Protection Act (TEAPA) which would end the use of wild animals like elephants in circuses.

Da http://all-4animals.com - Secondo quanto illustrato dall’ottima organizzazione animalista internazionale FAACE (http://www.faace.co.uk/pony.html), le giostre dei pony vivi sono un’attrazione piuttosto comune nelle aree di divertimenti spagnole localizzate soprattutto sulle zone costiere. In queste “attrazioni”, i pony vengono legati in capestri di metallo e sono obbligati a lavorare come giostre viventi, girando in circolo in maniera ossessiva per tutto il giorno. In genere, questi animali continuano a camminare in cerchio sotto il caldo estivo fino alle tre del mattino. FAACE sostiene di averne localizzati di svariati all’interno di parchi di divertimento in cui la musica era così alta da essere assordante. I pony, oltre a camminare senza sosta per tutto il giorno, sono anche costretti a trasportare sulla groppa un continuo flusso di “cavalieri”, con il risultato che anche quando la giostra ospita un solo “cliente”, tutti i cavalli sono comunque obbligati a far funzionare la macchina. Quando non sono legati alla giostra, questi pony vivono la loro intera esistenza all’interno di camion che li trasportano da una fiera all’altra, senza mai svolgere attività naturali come pascolare sull’erba o semplicemente riposare. Nel momento in cui uno dei pony non è più in grado di svolgere adeguatamente la sua mansione diventa semplicemente un ingranaggio rotto di cui sbarazzarsi, in genere al più vicino mattatoio. Video released by Animal Defenders International shows the elephant that appears alongside Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in the new film Water for Elephants, being beaten and electric-shocked during training. Water for Elephants, a romantic drama set in a 1930s animal circus in the USA, starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson, is premiering all over the world this month, with the London Premier last Tuesday. But the biggest star of the film is 42-year-old Asian elephant Tai, who plays Rosie, supplied by the performing animal supplier Have Trunk Will Travel, of California. In the film Rosie, played by Tai, is brutally attacked by the circus owner who beats her with a bull hook. But the producers, stars, and trainers have been at pains to stress that Tai was trained with kindness, marshmallows, and positive reinforcement.Gary Johnson, a founder of Have Trunk Will Travel claimed: "Tai was never hit in any way at all". American Humane observed the animal action during filming and said: "We're here observing prep on Water for Elephants and so we're here to make sure that everybody knows that not only the action on set but also the prep is humanely done, all these animals have been treated fairly and humanely throughout the entire course of their training." The vicious beating of an elephant at a circus in Greece has been exposed around the world after a video of the cruelty was posted on YouTube by animal rights campaigners. I would like to state this is not only happening in Greece but all over the world. The footage, secretly filmed by activists, shows a 40-year-old female Asian elephant being repeatedly struck across the head and body by her trainer using an ankus (a bullhook, with a long handle and sharp metal hook, used to control elephants) The circus is apparently an Italian company that regularly visits Greece. Animal protection organisations across Greece are now working together to take action and CAPS has offered support. Animal Defenders International have released shocking footage from behind the scenes at the winter quarters of Bobby Roberts Super Circus, which graphically shows violence and confinement of circus animals.ADI secured footage over a three and a half week period from a camera observing activity in a barn where the animals are kept when not touring, which shows a staggeringly high level of violence and serious animal husbandry flaws. Incidents included Annie (Anne), an elderly, severely arthritic 57 year old elephant being hit with a metal pitchfork and kicked around the face and body 48 times over the period of observation by workers, who are also seen beating and spitting on a camel and beating miniature ponies and horses on numerous occasions.The disturbing footage also shows Annie constantly chained for the entire period of filming by her front and arthritic back leg with only enough room to take one step forward or backwards. Jan Creamer, Chief Executive of Animal Defenders International said: "We have recently learnt that even now, after five years, Government is still toying with the idea of self regulation for the UK circus industry, even though they have already looked at this option on numerous occasions. "Does Lord Henley, the Defra Minister responsible, really believe that the circus industry will adhere to self regulation and suddenly stop the mistreatment and abuse of animals in their care as clearly evidenced in our video, because government asks them to? "Self regulation cannot work in an industry where random acts of violence and cruelty are commonplace and there is no discipline, structure, and no way to enforce regulations. If the Minister believes that the industry can be trusted to self regulate, then he is delusional and very much mistaken. "If government needs an overwhelming case to abandon consideration of self regulation and immediately enact a ban on the use of wild animals in UK circuses then this video contains all they require. All of the damning footage was obtained from UK circuses and we can conclusively prove this if challenged to do so by the circus industry." L'uomo salvato dai collaboratori grazie a getti d'acqua MILANO - Quando gli animali si ribellano: l'esibizione di leoni dentro l'arena di un circo in Ucraina stava per finire in tragedia. All'improvviso un leone si è avventato sul proprio istruttore che alla fine è riuscito a scappare. Un momento di terrore ripreso da un turista americano. L'addestratore può dirsi salvo per miracolo. Sabato scorso, sotto la tenda di un circo a Leopoli (Lviv), Doug Shephard e la sua famiglia sono stati testimoni di una tragedia sfiorata. Durante lo show con i leoni uno degli animali si scaglia improvvisamente verso il proprio istruttore azzannadolo alla gamba. Armato di telecamera, il turista americano comincia a filmare tutto: il domatore Oleksie Pinko, visibilmente zoppicante, per difendersi cerca di allontanare l'animale con una spranga di ferro, ma il gesto lo irrita ancora di più. Tanto che un secondo leone si avventa con ferocia sull'uomo e lo scaraventa ai bordi dell'arena prima di azzannarlo al braccio. Solo il getto d'acqua ad alta pressione dei collaboratori evita infine che l'ammaestratore venga letteralmente sbranato vivo. Trasportato subito in ospedale, le condizioni dell'uomo sarebbero stabili. I contorni dell'incidente in Ucraina sono simili a quello verificatosi qualche settimana fa nell'MGM Resort di Las Vegas, Nevada. Tuttavia, se in questo caso l'attacco si è verificato dietro ad un vetro di protezione, a dividere il pubblico dall'arena in Ucraina c'era solo una modesta rete di sicurezza.

The Ugliest Show on Earth report (USoE) and video chart the findings of an 18-month study and investigation into the use of animals in circuses - the most comprehensive study of animals in circuses ever undertaken. Between 1996 and 1998, ADI undercover Field Officers worked in 13 UK animal circuses and winter quarters, and 5 foreign circuses which were exhibiting animals supplied by UK circus animal suppliers and trainers. The team of five people involved in the undercover work made observations totalling 7,280 hours. Over 700 hours of videotape was recorded, with nearly 400 hours of this being used in evidence for the prosecutions which followed the publication of the report and release of the video programme of the same name. The video highlights the main findings of the study and is probably most famous for the shocking scenes of brutality to elephants and chimpanzees at Mary Chipperfield Promotions in Hampshire, UK. These scenes allowed ADI to issue summonses for cruelty to animals which were subsequently taken over by the UKs Crown Prosecution Service, and convictions for cruelty were secured against Mary Chipperfield Cawley, her husband Roger Cawley, and their elephant keeper, Michael Steve Gills.

Ascoltai questa canzone diversi anni fa e subito me ne innamorai La Corrida di Francis Cabrel, cantautore e poeta francese è un toro che parla un toro fiero e orgoglioso che si ritrova suo malgrado a combattere contro qualcosa che non conosce ovvero il dolore e le umiliazioni che solo lessere umano è capace di arrecare!!!Ho deciso di farne un video nella speranza che coloro che trovano la Corrida uno spettacolo divertente, riescano a mettersi nei panni del toro e capiscono che in realtà la Corrida è una delle peggiori e inutili barbarie che luomo ha messo in scena!Il video è completo di traduzione in italiano ma per ovvi motivi i sottotitoli scorrono molto veloci, per ovviare al problema trascrivo qui la traduzione completa del testo.Alla fine del video è spiegato brevemente come i tori vengano penalizzati prima, durante e dopo la Corrida ma anche i cavalli, spesso vecchi e malati, feriti, con le corde vocali tagliate, gli occhi bendati, sono vittime della corrida. Las fiestas 2009 de San Mateo en Logroño empezaron con el tradicional chupinazo el 19 de Septiembre y con manifestación Antitaurina. Lastima que no lo sabia porque sali de casa sin my equipaje fotografico. Cuando llegue cerca del Parque del Espolón oí musica y voces, me acerque para ver lo que pasaba y no me lo creia, una manifestación Antitaurina en el centro de la capital Riojana. Joder, como cambian las cosas en tan poco tiempo! No tuve mas remedio que sacar mi iPhone y meterme en el publico que cantaba y bailaba con muchísimo animo para poder presentarles este reportaje. En el publico había gente que venia de muchas partes del pais y del mundo. Los organizadores de la manifestación son de AnimaNaturalis, una organización mundial para la defensa de todos los animales.
