Descrizione - A Manhattan man was charged Wednesday with abusing a small dog after his vicious attack was caught on surveillance tape.
Authorities say NYPD Housing Bureau officers were recently monitoring cameras at the Grant Houses in Morningside Heights when they saw a man kicking a dog in the elevator.
Police have identified the suspect as Charles Grant.
After circulating stills from the video around the building, police found and arrested Grant for animal torture.
Authorities say Grant's girlfriend owns the 12-pound Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix.
"That someone would do that to an animal could do something similar to a human being. We know that this individual has been arrested for assault, for criminal possession of a weapon. So, it is of concern to society when people can brutalize a defenseless animal like that," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
The dog is being treated at a nearby animal hospital and is expected to be released back to the owner.
The five police officers who helped identify the suspect were the same officers who helped nab Alejandro Morales, who is accused of stabbing nine-year-old Anthony Maldonado to death in the same building this past weekend.
Kelly honored the officers Wednesday with a certificate of recognition for their work in the cases.
